HOLLAND CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2008-2009

The P.E. classes at NSMS and SSMS cover both sport activities and fitness work. In the sport activity units, our goal is for you to improve your skill level in those activities. Improving your skill level will enable you to enjoy the activity more and will also allow you to get more health benefits when you participate in such activities in the future. The fitness workouts will improve your overall health and well being, which will be beneficial to you whether you participate in athletics or not. What you learn in the workout sessions will be beneficial to you both now and in the future.
How often we do sport activities and the sport activities you participate in will be determined by the grade you are in. The number of fitness days and what is done on those days will also be determined by the grade you are in.

FAQ’s

1. Do I need a lock to lock my locker?

Your locker needs to always be locked, whether you are in P.E. class or not. Your personal items will not be taken out of your locker if it is locked. Items get taken when lockers are not locked.
You may bring your own lock or you may “rent” one from us for $5.00. When you return the lock to us, you will receive your $5.00 back. If you bring your own lock, tell your teacher the combination so that if you forget the numbers, he/she will be able to help you.

2. Is there a P.E. uniform?

The preferred P.E. uniform is a T-shirt, a pair of athletic
shorts, and tennis shoes. Sandals, flip flops, clogs, crocs, and shoes that
easily come off are not acceptable for P.E. Additional clothing
(sweatshirts, warm up suits, etc.) may be worn for warmth but must be
clothing you would normally use for exercise. DO NOT WEAR THE
CLOTHES YOU WORE TO SCHOOL THAT DAY FOR P.E. CLASS.
Other students do not appreciate it when they have to sit by someone in
class who just came from P.E. wearing the clothes they exercised in.

3. In athletic contests the officials make the athletes take off all jewelry, is
that also true for P.E.?

Lock up your jewelry in your locker during P.E. Watches, bracelets, and some earrings could break during activities or could scratch or hurt other students. The teachers will have watches so you can get in on time.

4. After we change into our P.E. clothes, where do we go?

The “white board” will usually tell you what we will be doing on a
particular day and where your class should meet.
SOUTHSHORE STUDENTS: The people who refinished the gym floor told us to stop using the west doors to enter and exit the gym because such activity is damaging the floor. Therefore, when we are having P.E. outside, you need to enter and exit through the doors at the west end of the hallway where you enter the locker rooms.

5. How is my grade determined?

Generally, your grade is a combination of the amount of effort you
give, your attitude in class, and how well you perform sport skills that you are taught. Each of
your teachers will give you more information. You may learn more about grading from the rubric found on Mr. Smits' website ("How Jane and James are graded").

6. What if I don’t feel well or am injured from something that happened
outside of P.E. class?

If you are not feeling well in the morning before school, please bring a
note from an adult at home asking that you be excused for the day.
If you need to be excused from P.E. for more than a day or two, please
bring a doctor’s note explaining the problem and the length of inactivity
needed.
If you get sick during the school day, talk to your teacher and work
something out. Obviously, this is only going to happen once in awhile.

7. What happens if I break some equipment during P.E.? Am I responsible
to replace it?

You will not be held responsible for damage to equipment that is
damaged when it is being used properly. Students will have to replace
equipment they damage when they use the equipment improperly.

8. Where do we go after class is done and we have our school clothes back
on?

NORTHSHORE: Please wait by the entrance to locker rooms where
the juice machines are located until it is time to go.
SOUTHSHORE: Please wait by the back of the auditorium until the
final bell rings.
