iMovie: PSA
Purpose:
- Learn to use iMovie.
- Learn to tell a story and make an impact with visual media.
To Do:
- With a partner:
- Evaluating a PSA
- One runs the mouse and one the keboard. You decide.
- Use "Shift-Control-Apple-4" for screen shots of each cut and paste into Appleworks Drawing.
- View a few PSAs and pick one you like - 30 second. - 15 minutes.
Create a storyboard of still shots everytime the video cuts. - 2 days. - Use Atomic Learning and PSA websites. Identify:
- Camera shots. - long, medium, closeup, extreme closeup.
- Camera Movement - Pan, tilt, arc, pedestal, trucking, dolly.
- Camera Angle - flat, high, low.
- Camera Rules - rule of thirds, room at top, lead space, background. Identify 2 shots that used one of the rules.
- Type out script at the end. Ideally do a two column script. Will demo in class.
- Sound effects or music. Put under picture if only in scene or at the end if throughout PSA.
- Emotion felt afterwards. Put at the end of storyboard.
- Camera shots. - long, medium, closeup, extreme closeup.
- View a few PSAs and pick one you like - 30 second. - 15 minutes.
- Evaluating a PSA
- With PSA group.
- Brainstorm - a meaningful topic.
- Storyboard - visual, audio, text plan.
- Pitch the plan to the producer - Mr. Vos.
- Summarize PSA message in one sentence.
- Describe how you intend to share that message visually.
- Describe inteneded audience.
- What about your message will make an impact?
- Divide up the jobs.
- Gather resources.
- Put PSA together in iMovie individually. Each person will make their own PSA but may use the resources gathered by the group.
- Share final PSA with group.
- Then finally share PSA with class.
- Publish PSA on the website.
Timeline:
- 5 days
Requirements:
- PSA needs to be no longer than 30 seconds. Every second of commercial time counts. Your grade will be reduced if over 30 seconds.
- Motion clips - video taken with a video camera.
- Still frames - photos,taken with a camera, video still frames, etc.
- Titles - use to make an impact and inform the audience.
- Sound effects - short clips of sound to enhance the impact.
- Garageband Music - fits the tone of the psa announcement
- If you include any of the following the project will be accepted as long as the guidelines are followed but a copy of the PSA can not be placed on the web:
- Commercially produced music - max. 30 seconds from an artist. Need to give credit.
- Movie clip - max. 10% of a movie (about no more than 3 minutes). Need to give credit.
- Photos from the web - need to give credit.

- Do the PSA Rubric with another person in the class.
Final Steps:
- Export a Quicktime for the web copy to your movie folder.
- Name the movie "PSA: (your name)."
- Move a copy to your sites folder.
