ROSE PARK NEWSLETTER
September 28, 2007

PRAYER AND PRAISE Last week three of our RP family went unexpectedly to the hospital. We are thankful to report that all three returned home. Jonathon Lowry (4s Zwart) had pneumonia and is slowly regaining his strength. Jake Wassink (2nd Bulthuis) broke his arm while playing at school and is struggling with a recurring fever. Mrs. Gorter (ESS) had an emergency appendectomy last Thursday. We have had other students who have had illnesses also. Please pray that all will recover swiftly. We praise God for watching over our loved ones!

VILLAGES Have you heard? This year North Shore Middle School students and Rose Park 1st-5th grade students have been joined together in “Villages.” We have two students from each grade level in a group. Each group represents a country (my group is Cuba) and will meet once a month. We will learn about our country throughout the year as well as share devotions, activities, exercise, and eat and play together. Our “Villages” Committee has a lot of creative things for us to do. Our school theme this year is “Love God, Love Others.” We hope that the first place we learn to share our love of God and others is in our own group. At the end of the school year, we will have one big Field Day at the high school track. We call this our Olympic Day Field Day because of the summer Olympics next summer. Our Villages (countries) will march around the track and participate in many games. We are excited about this fascinating adventure. Please pray for us!

THANK YOU Thank you for your support of our late start day. Elementary teachers met as grade levels. K-1st, and ESS teachers started training in DIBELS, which we will finish on our Staff Learning Day on October 17. Teachers of grades 2-5 worked on rubric writing for report cards, while music and PE teachers from the three elementary campuses did curriculum work together.

THE 5TH GRADE BEGINNING BAND PARENT OPEN HOUSE IS NEXT TUESDAY, OCT. 4, FROM 4:00 UNTIL 6:30 P.M. AT THE SOUTH SHORE MS BAND ROOM. THE PURPOSE OF THIS OPEN HOUSE IS FOR PARENTS TO TALK INDIVIDUALLY WITH MS. ROOT ABOUT THEIR CHILD AND HER/HIS CHOICE OF INSTRUMENT. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM MEYER MUSIC WILL BE PRESENT TO DISCUSS RENTAL OR PURCHASE OF AN INSTRUMENT. A LIST OF USED INSTRUMENTS AVAILABLE FOR SALE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN OUT.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM MS. ROOT --- PLEASE DON'T PURCHASE A BAND INSTRUMENT FROM THE INTERNET OR WAL-MART OR SAM'S CLUB WITHOUT DISCUSSING IT WITH ME FIRST. OFTEN TIMES THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE IN BAD SHAPE OR ARE OF POOR QUALITY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN AND IMPOSSIBLE FOR OUR MUSIC STORES TO REPAIR. YOU CAN REACH ME AT proot@hollandchristian.org or 820-3222.

NEW!!! PRESCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASSES During the 07-08 school year, Rose Park and South Side Preschools will be offering exciting discovery classes aimed at 3 and 4 year olds. Exploring the solar system, a trip to Hawaii, and uncovering the science of balloons are just a few of the electives. Check out the bright green brochure for the class options. Sign up is in the school office. See you there!

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND It's time to launch OM at Holland Christian! OM is a creative problem-solving program in a team setting where teams from other schools across the state compete against each other. Students from fourth and fifth grade are encouraged to discuss OM with their parents and sign up for a tryout session. Your student should pick up information regarding OM at the school office. For other questions, and if you are interested in being a coach, contact Sue Lesky at (616) 392-3878.

ALSO SENT HOME TODAY A Birthday Book letter from the Media Center and a note about saving cartridges.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER AT SCHOOL? On Monday, or Monday and Tuesday mornings, we need someone to sell lunch tickets in the hallway between 7:45 and 8:30 A.M. Call the office if you can help.
