Road Victory Sends Maroons into Own Tourneyslswim.jpg
Prior to the Winter Break, the boys’ swimming and diving program, and their small roster, suffered from fatigue competing four times in just over ten days.  That wear and tear really took its toll and the break could not have come at a better time.  With over two and half weeks off, the Maroons returned revitalized and took the long, and slippery, trip to Spring Lake High School.  The refocus of the team aided their cause, as they were able to pull out a tough non-conference victory winning 99-86.  With every race coming down to the finish, each team’s depth was the key to pulling out points not only at the top of the race, but also the second, third and fourth places that made the difference for Holland Christian.  Things got off to a good start for the maroon and white as HC came from behind to win the 200 Yard Medley Relay as junior Evan Smeenge dug deep and anchored the leg to give the team the victory in a time of 1:50.33 winning by just .2 of a second.  This got things going and E.J. Leuschner backed it up winning in the 50 Yard Freestyle (24.57).  His strong night continued when he won the 100 Yard Freestyle in a Division III state cut time of 52.08.  On the swimming side of the race, Holland Christian also got a victory in the 200 Yard Freestyle relay as the combination of Smeenge, Leuschner and Alex Baumann and smeengesl.jpgAdam Alexander won the race by over a second in a time of 1:37.73.  Just as the Maroons won the opening race of the meet, they closed down the meet winning another relay.  There was no come from behind as Alexander got the Maroons out strong and they never looked back.  Smeenge and Leuschner provided good middle legs and anchor Justin Moralez brought it home in 3:36.08.  Also benefiting the team on Wednesday night was Marcus Ackerman on the boards.  As the only diver he has little room for error and made every dive count winning the event with a score of 174.85.  On the evening, the team received twenty three season best times.  “On the night there were too many great efforts to single it down,” said a proud head coach Todd Smeenge (left).  “I really feel we are finally where we need to be and the guys hard work is starting to get rewarded.”  Coming off the key road victory that evened their record to 2-2, Holland Christian returns to the friendly confines of the Holland Aquatic Center to host their own Mid-Season Invitational on Saturday.  The meet will begin at 12:00 p.m.  RESULTS
