SUMMER CAMPS

/Summer Camp Offerings

Not only do we have our usual round of first-rate athletic camps for the kiddos this summer, but we’re excited about our new offerings! We’re adding an Algebra Camp through the Summer Algebra Institute (SAI) for 3rd-4th graders, and 5th-6th graders. It’s a national math camp taught by Bob Hazen, who has previously taught 3,500 camp students using SAI’s unique hands-on approach utilizing color, shape, texture, music, manipulatives and games. The idea is for students to learn to see the objects behind the math symbols, in a similar manner to how we picture objects represented by words and letters. For example, when someone says the word “dog,” most people don’t see the symbols/letters D-O-G; they instead see the animal itself, with its color, shape, size, and texture, since they’ve seen and interacted with a dog. In contrast, when most people see the algebraic term “x-squared,” they just see the symbols themselves, not the object that it is representing. So the whole idea behind the SAI is to introduce young kids to algebra in such a way that “x” and “x-squared” are actual objects with color, shape, size, texture, and context. While gifted students benefit from SAI, students who are average and even struggling with math also have been successful. Students don’t need any previous algebra experience or supplies–just a willing and teachable attitude!

We’re also offering two art classes the first week of camps, both in the art room at Pine Ridge: Sculpture for ages 7-12, where students will explore 3-D construction in a variety of materials as well as view famous architecture; and Drawing & Watercolor, also for ages 7-12, where students practice a variety of drawing and watercolor techniques.

For all the rest of the sports camps, you will register through MaxOne, which is the new name of Programax, for those of you who have registered your kids for various HC sports before. These directions may help:

Description: The Summer Algebra Institute (SAI) is a nationally known math enrichment camp taught by recently new Holland resident and HCS substitute teacher Bob Hazen. In SAI:
• more than 3,500 students since 1995 have benefitted…
• from SAI’s unique hands-on approach to algebra…
• that utilizes color, shape, texture, music, manipulatives, and games…
• so students see the geometric shapes behind the math symbols…
• in the same way we picture things represented by words (when hearing the word “dog,” most people don’t see the symbols D-O-G; they instead see the animal itself – an object with color, shape, size, and texture).
In SAI, our goal has always been…
• to introduce young students to substantive algebra
• long before the crucial years of 7th-8th-9th grades
• so that both “x” and “x-squared” are more than just abstract symbols
• but are objects that have color, shape, size, and texture
• while teaching principles that connect algebra back to the arithmetic
• and benefit both gifted and struggling students.
