South Side/Pine Ridge – Newsletter September 2020

Dear Parents,

September is a month of settling into routines and we are looking forward to these happening over the next few weeks. Along with the routines there will be a few activities that add fun and excitement to our routines. Others, such as MAP testing is an activity that may not be fun or exciting for the students, but, as a staff, we look forward to these tests. MAP tests help us better individualize instruction especially in math and language arts. Hopefully, this newsletter will communicate and highlight what is happening at South Side and Pine Ridge this month.

Walkathon

This years walk-a-thon will be the Week of September 21st. Students will be walking with their individual class during this week and on their own time scheduled to raise money for school.  Donation packets will be sent home this Thursday, September 3, with the students with more information.

MIP

Daily At Home Student Screenings Required

As a reminder, parents are required to screen their child at home each morning before going to school. If your child has any new or increasing symptoms below, they should not go to school and you should contact your child’s doctor for additional instruction.

  • Temperature of 100.4 or higher or signs of fever (chills/sweating)
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Severe headache
  • Loss of taste or smell

Masks

We must follow the MI Safe Schools Road Map when it comes to masks. Having processed this for a while, we believe we have some comfortable solutions to the initial problems they posed. Our children in Preschool through Fifth Grade must only wear masks when they are in “common spaces.” These spaces are defined for us this year at South Side and Pine Ridge as hallways, entrances, and exits. Our children will need to wear a mask as they enter the building, walk in the hallway to their locker and until they reach the classroom door. If you choose, however, you may tell your child’s teacher that you would like your child to remain in a mask for the duration of the day. However, the requirement for masks is only in the hallways. Once in the classroom, it is permissible for them not to wear their mask. We do ask that masks are laundered each night or disposable masks are replaced regularly. Teachers and staff will be wearing masks the whole day.

Hot Lunch Accounts

There are two ways to add funds to your child’s hot lunch account: You may drop off a check made out to Holland Christian to our office and the funds will be added. You may SEND a check with your child to the school office and the funds will be processed for you. Or you can add funds on-line through sendmoneytoschool.com (fees have been removed from this program). You will need your Student’s ID # to set up new accounts. This was emailed to you earlier this month.

Principal Office Hours

The second Friday of the month I will hold open office hours at South Side from 8:30-9:15. The third Friday of the month I will hold open office hours at Pine Ridge from 8:30-9:15. Come and grab a cup of coffee, wear a mask, and pull up a chair. Let’s talk through your thoughts, wonderings, questions and ideas. I look forward to serving you again this year.

Drop of – Pick up

Carpool Details South Side K-2nd Grade 2020-21

Drop Off 7:45-8:10 am

When you arrive, please use the circle drive off of Pine Ave. Pull up to the curb so your child can get out directly onto the sidewalk. Students should put a mask on before exiting the car. The first couple of weeks, teachers will be outside to greet students. They will all sit as a class until everyone arrives. For the safety of everyone, we ask that parents stay in cars and do not park along the circle drive.

We understand that drop-off these first few weeks can be emotional for many families; however, to keep the lines from getting too long, we ask that you say good-bye to your child in a timely manner. Teachers and staff will be there to help everyone feel safe and excited for this new school year.

Pick up at 3:10

As you enter the circle drive off of Pine Ave, please stay to the right next to the curb and pull forward as far as possible. Once the first row of cars along the curb is full, cars should start a second row on the left side of the circle drive, by again pulling forward as far as possible. Students will come out of the building and sit with their class in the same spots they were in the morning.

A staff member will be dismissing students to the cars in the first row. For everyone’s safety, please stay parked until all those students are in cars. Once those cars are full, we will wave at the first car as a signal that it is ok to exit. We will then repeat the process for the second row of cars. We are asking all kids waiting with their classes to remain seated until they are dismissed. Cars moving, kids don’t. Kids moving, cars don’t!

Picture Day

For those of you really planning ahead, South Side’s picture days are Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24. Once order forms are received from GPI they will be sent home with students. If you are ordering a yearbook this is the time to do that also.

Medications at school

If your child needs to take medication at school, we need an updated form signed by their physician each school year. If you have not done this yet, please do so asap. You are welcome to contact our school nurse, Hendrina Cupery (hcupery@hollandchristian.org). She will help you set up a plan for the office to assist in administering the medication. For safety reasons, Holland Christian Schools is not able to dispense any medication (prescription or non-prescription) to our students without a doctor’s order. Thank you!
