Forest School July 2021 Newsletter
Hello Dear Forest Families!
We have been in prayer over you this summer and miss your dear children! We trust you’ve been enjoying summertime adventures and creating beautiful memories together. We can’t wait to hear all about it from your child this fall.
Our Forest Family is GROWING! We are welcoming 26 additional kindergarteners to our Forest Family! My prayer is that EVERY child and EVERY family would find home-away-from-home in the Forest. Meet our new staff members in our Forest Family who will help guide, care for and love your child:

Mychala Spoelman assisting with Mr. Harig’s class:
My name is Mychala Spoelman and I am SO excited to join the Forest team at Holland Christian. Growing up in Ravenna, most of my time has been spent in the outdoors whether I am hunting, fishing, hiking, camping or just swimming in the Great Lakes. I recently graduated from Northern Michigan University (go ‘cats!) and will officially receive my degree in August after my internship is completed. I will receive a Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Recreation Leadership & Management with a minor in Environmental Studies. Tacos, sunsets and doggos are my jam and I am a firm believer that pineapple does not belong on pizza. I have a passion for the outdoors and believe that God’s natural handiwork is the best classroom. I hope that in my time in the Forest I can help instill the same passion in the kids and help them become excellent learners.
Anna Hicks assisting with Miss Wierenga’s class:
Hello, my name is Anna Hicks. I grew up in the U.P. falling in love with a personal God while hiking the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, spending time on Lake Superior, and tromping through the forest. I had incredible experiences and mentors as part of a one room school 1-8th grade that kindled a creativity for working with young kids. I have been blessed to meet and love on kids all over the country in partnership with Children’s Ministries, as well as be devoted to raising my own three blessings. I am honored to anticipate this year in the Forest with God and your precious ones, thank you.
Mary Terpstra assisting Tuesdays and Thursdays with Miss VanVliet’s class:
I am so excited to be helping the first graders at HC Forest School! In 40 years of working in a variety of outdoor education programs and nature centers, this is the kind of experience I have not been able to have and have always wanted, God’s timing! I look forward to being an outdoor “grandma” as we grow together in curiosity, creativity, outdoor explorations and caring for each other! Bless you!
Melanie Beckman assisting with Miss Slenk’s class:
I am Melanie Beckman and I am excited to be joining the Forest School Family! I look forward to meeting those whom I haven’t met yet. I am married to Bill Beckman and we are blessed to be the parents of our daughter, Charlotte (7th grade), and our sons, Will (5th grade) and Benjamin (K). As a family we enjoy boating in the summer and hiking in the winter. We live in an “old fixer” downtown that keeps us tuned in to youtube for all the DIY help we can get! We like to take bike rides and walks around the city. I love reading, running, yoga, gardening, and just being with family and friends! God has been so faithful and I rest in his promises.
I am so eager to begin this school year! I am already praying over the 3rd grade students, that they may have fun this summer, enjoying time with family and friends, and for safety and excitement during whatever adventures they may have. May God give them peace and joy, calm any nerves, and may he give them a heart for Jesus as we learn all about his world in the forest!

Safety Policy Updates
- Face coverings will be optional during summer sports camps and will continue to be optional when we begin the school year on August 24, 2021.
- COVID-19 vaccines will not be required for your child to attend school this fall.
- COVID-19 testing for participation in school athletics will no longer be required.
- Our student bodies can begin to gather together in large groups again! Think: chapel, assemblies, convocation, and more.
- We will continue to contact trace (providing information only, no quarantines required) and notify close-contacts of their exposure to positive COVID-19 cases at school.
We acknowledge that there are individuals who may have health concerns that make them more susceptible to COVID-19 and are at higher risk. We support your personal decisions to protect yourself and your family and will continue to do our best as a school system to prioritize the health of all students, families, and staff.

Health Appraisal and Immunization Requirements
Health appraisals are required for our 2021-22 incoming preschool and Kindergarten students. As you schedule your well child appointments with your health care provider, please be aware these evaluations will need to be completed. All students must be up-to-date on their immunizations BEFORE they start the new school year. Any students without the required immunizations or approved waivers will not be allowed to begin school until they are complete and approved by the State of Michigan. We are grateful for your help with this!
