FS/SS/PR Newsletter-August 23, 2019
We are off to a great start at Holland Christian! In spite of the hot, humid weather classrooms teachers, students, and support staff each fulfilled their roles above and beyond expectations. Thank you for blessing us with your children, for your prayers, your gift of time to drop off and pick up, your willingness to meet with us about the coming school year, and your support in so many ways. It is such a joy for us to partner with you!
IMPORTANT TO DO TODAY
It is imperative that you update your demographic information in PowerSchool now with your latest and most accurate contact information. Simply go in your browser to ps.hollandchristian.org, and, if you are a returning parent, log in with your personal log in and password. If you have difficulty, click the “If you are having trouble…” link to retrieve your log in information. If you are a first-time parent, create a login for yourself. Then, either an “update demographic screen” will automatically pop up, or simply click the “change demographics” button on the left of the screen. This information is necessary for field trip participation, emergency response and treatment, student photo permission, and for the office to easily be able to contact a parent or guardian as needed or desired. When listing your child’s emergency contacts, please be sure to list two contacts other than yourself. Again, please do this today to ensure that your child’s teacher has the most accurate contact information for you. The teachers do a lot of communicating with parents especially at the start of the year, and we want to make sure that you receive all of this communication. Thank you!
Holland Christian Student Information Policy
Holland Christian Schools acquires student information, including photographs and videos, at school events during the year. Read the school’s Student Information Policy here. By enrolling your student at Holland Christian Schools, you consent to the use of and reproduction by Holland Christian Schools of this information in school publications. If you do not want your student’s information to be used, you may complete an opt-out form at the Administration Office.
Medications at school
With the start of the year fast approaching this is a time to remind parents of a couple of things listed below:
- Students with medications at school, we must have the most current information/documentation that is available from the physicians office.
- Medication must be in its original bottle from the pharmacy/store a with recent date. * we can not dispense expired medication.
Thank you for attention to these details.
Whether you are new or experienced at South Side & Pine Ridge, for your convenience, here is a link to our Elementary Handbook found on the HC website. Please refer to the handbook for general information, or with specific questions you may have about life at South Side & Pine Ridge.
Important information to bookmark on your web browser: While we send home occasional emails, there will be weekly notes from the classroom teachers on their blog page, as well as South Side/Pine Ridge Blog from the office. If and when papers that need to be returned to school are sent home, we will notify you of this in our blogs, as well.
HCS Back-to-School 2019 Convocation
HCS Back-to-School 2019 Convocation for all Preschool-12th grade students and all who are part of the HCS community: Wednesday, AUGUST 28, 9AM, HCHS Gymnasium
You are invited along with the entire Holland Christian Schools community to our annual Convocation Ceremony to kick-off our 2019-2020 school year. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, alumnus, friend, or supporter, we would love to welcome you along with all of our Preschool-12th grade students in a time of celebration, prayer, praise, and listening to God’s Word at the beginning of this exciting new year. Various Holland Christian students, staff, and community members will lead in song, prayer, and devotion. Come and join us Wednesday, August 28, 9AM in the high school gym for this very special convocation service. You will be blessed!
We hope you have treasured the note written to your child from last year’s teacher and tucked inside the special HC baton. It’s not too late to write your own note to your child, or ask a close family friend, leader, or mentor to write their encouragement to your child about what they see as God’s gifts in your student at this point in their growing. We ask that each baton be returned to school in time for our convocation on August 28. Your child’s teacher has a special devotional planned during which batons will be passed from your child to his or her new teacher. You are welcome to bring these batons to the Ice Cream Social event, during Meet the Teacher Night, or on the first day of school, whichever is most convenient for you. Please keep in mind we need to have them here at school by Wednesday, August 28.
Interested in getting more involved? Then come check out our school’s Parent Board. We will have our 1st meeting on Tuesday, September 10 @ 8:30 in the South Side teachers’ lounge. Or feel free to check out/message our fb page HC South Side & Pine Ridge Parent Team for any questions.

Carpool/Parent Pick up Procedure
Student safety must be, and remains our primary concern for everyone during student drop-off and dismissal at Pine Ridge. Our students, like any pedestrians, are defenseless against a moving vehicle. Do not assume anything as a driver. Remain alert always, and continue to scan and be aware of any and all students who may be around your vehicle at any given time as you slowly proceed.
Please communicate this information to any and all who may be involved in transporting your student(s) to and from school. All of us must be vigilant in observing these simple rules:
The drive along 40th is for bus lane only.
The drive off Graafschap road is for carpool vehicles only.
Use the Graafschap drive for dropping off your students. Please pull forward along the sidewalk (in front of our gym) at the curb. Do not stop anywhere on the traffic circle by the main entrance. Yield to the busses.
Do not park, attended or unattended, in the drive longer than to safely let your students out of your vehicle.
Park only in designated parking lot spots if you are getting out of your vehicle with your students. These would be the parking spaces along the grassy area to the west of the drive.
Remain in your vehicles as we direct your students to your car during after-school carpool. Do not get out of your cars. We will get your students to you. Catch the staff member in the middle of the loading zone to get your child(ren) who do not see you on their own.
Generally, we only load students in the “loading zone” as indicated by the solid white lines painted across the drive, and by signs on the sidewalk next to the drive. When all cars are loaded in the loading zone, a teacher will dismiss each file of cars. * Do not move, until the attendant dismisses you for child(ren) safety!
When people are moving, cars are not; when cars are moving, people are not. Once your car is in the loading zone, lock it down, and do not move again until invited to do so by the staff member at the front of the loading zone.
If you are walking with your child(ren) to the parking lot, do not walk through the carpool lines. Rather, cross in front of the carpool lines only when we are loading students, waiting, of course, when we are dismissing cars.
Remember these rules are for the safety of all of our children. At times, it will mean we will have to be patient. Thank you!
For those of you really planning ahead, Pine Ridge’s picture day will be, September 12. More specific information and scheduling will come once we are underway through classroom and the Pine Ridge blogs.

Holland Christian will be Rolling out a new athletic online registration system. Holland Christian Schools is now partnered with FinalForms, an athlete online registration company.
