Lenten Discipleship Practices

As we begin the journey to the cross through Lent, we want to walk with you and center ourselves around Christ, His death and resurrection. To do that together, starting with this week Wednesday—Ash Wednesday—we will be posting on social media and the HC website on weekdays a short Bible passage and some conversation questions that revolve around Discipleship Practices (behaviors that are rooted in the Bible, church history, and are used as our integration of faith in all that we do at HC). This is not a checklist, or to-do list, but simply a way to partner together as we worship Christ in all things!
If you want to read more about our HCS preK-12 Discipleship Practices, including how we strive to be “God-glorifying,” “Word-rooted,” or “Wisdom-seeking,” among other practices, you can visit hollandchristian.org/academics/faith-development —then ask your child or grandchild what they have been learning about each practice in school!

Discipleship Practice: God Glorifying
Scripture: “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” Psalm 115:1
Focus questions: Would those around me describe me as one who gives grace to those who hear? How could we plan to build others up in specific ways tomorrow?

Discipleship Practice: Community Growing
Scripture: “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.” Romans 12:16

Discipleship Practice: Kingdom Building
Scripture: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10
Focus Questions: Can you identify areas of your direct influence, that are not “as it is in heaven?” In what ways is God calling you to live so His Kingdom might come into that area? How can our family be active agents, through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, be Kingdom Builders today?

Discipleship Practice: Beauty Creating
Scripture: “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”” Isaiah 52:7
Focus Questions: Can Isaiah 52:7 be said of you? In the things you do, the words you speak, and the attitude you project, cause people to say “Your God reigns!”?

Discipleship Practice: Image Reflecting
Scripture:  “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27
Focus Questions: Because God created humanity in His image, when people bump into you, they bump into the image of God. How does that inform your behavior toward others? How does this knowledge call us to live more humbly?

Wednesday, February 17: Ash Wednesday

Discipleship Practice: Grace Breathing
Scripture: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

Discipleship Practice: Word Rooted
Scripture: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
Focus Questions: As we read God’s Word, how does it discern our thoughts and intentions?  Are we open to the Holy Spirit when we read the Bible? When we read the Bible, are we seeing the Big Story of the Biblical Narrative throughout?

Friday, February 19

Discipleship Practice: Wisdom Seeking
Scripture: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5
Focus Questions: Do we believe that all wisdom comes from God? Where have we, individually, or as a community, sought wisdom from other sources? Are we faithfully asking God for wisdom?
