Maroon Messenger: June 2019
It is hard to believe that the 2018-19 school year has come to a close! I can’t express what an honor it has been for me to become part of the Holland Christian High School family! As we end the year please join me in congratulating the 2019 graduating class. These 170 Seniors celebrated their graduation on May 21 and we wish them well as they leave us to do whatever they are being called to do, both in the near future as well as for the rest of their lives.
We also say goodbye and thank you to teachers John Knoester, Tim Lont , Elizabeth Mogck, Maria Rooks, Amanda Cisneros, Paige Deur, Caitlin Skiba and Lydia Frens who will not be returning to HCHS next fall. We can not thank them enough for the love, time and support that they have given to our students over their time at HC! We are confident that God will bless them greatly as they move on to the next chapter in their lives. We are currently working to fill these positions and will communicate with you next fall whom God has called to fill the gaps.
As with all school years there are highs and lows and this year is no exception, but without a doubt it has been a wonderful year. I have watched students grow into becoming the young men and women that God created them to be and strive to support each other by creating a Christ centered community that brings Shalom to Chaos as well as welcomes and includes everyone by Preparing a Table for All. As much as these positive activities have been at the center of our year together, there have also been actions and behaviors over the year that have been obstacles to creating this type of community. Excluding others, tearing each other down, posting negative social media comments about others, playing music that contains racial slurs and using language that is not Christ honoring are also behaviors that have occurred. Please know the expectation is that we all will strive to create a learning environment that is Christ honoring and develops community. We know that there will be times when we fall short of meeting this expectation but also know that together, with God’s help, we will address the issue, learn from it, build each other up and strive to restore community. I am excited to see what God has planned for the future as we grow together and become a school community that is Christ honoring in all we do.
I want to wish you and your families a safe and relaxing summer. If you have any questions during the summer about school, please call the High School office at (616) 820-2905 and Kelli Van Eerden or Charity VanderLaan will help you.
It is an honor to serve as your Principal.

Join us in a Random Acts of Kindness Day on June 19th (the anniversary of the accident). Imagine the Christian wave of kindness we can make! Riley had such a warm heart, kind spirit, and big smile. We want everyone to feel it on June 19. Join our Facebook page, “Riley’s Kindness” to receive ideas and to share the kind gesture you gave (or received!). There are business cards available at all Russ’ locations and Quality Car wash locations for you to hand out to the recipients of your kindness so they will learn the meaning behind our actions on this day!
