Maroon Messenger: October 2018
Hello Parents and Friends,
We continue to have a good year at HCHS! In early September we hosted our annual parent night and I greatly enjoyed meeting and visiting with several of you. It sounded like many of you took this opportunity to meet our wonderful teachers and get a sneak peek into their hearts and classrooms as they shared a bit about themselves and the classes they are passionate to teach.
I love it when the activities of our days and the skills and behaviors learned and practiced by our students live out our theme of Preparing a Table. I have been hearing several stories of our students going out and serving our community. The other morning on my way to work, I was reminded of the true dedication when I saw a group of our students heading into the Holland Rescue Mission, led by one of our marvelous teachers. Our Discipleship Practices help us to think of different ways we can Prepare a Table, which is living life the way God designed and intended it to be.
This month, students completed the first MAP testing session. In the weeks ahead we will begin to get some data and will be learning how we as a school can best use this data to improve instruction for each individual student.
We also recently hosted the movie presentation of Screenagers. Screenagers takes a deeply personal approach into the vulnerable corners of family life, including exploring struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. We had a very good turnout and those who came appreciated the information, education, and strategies for parents that were shared.
As always, I pray that you may bless and be blessed with your families in rest, recreation, and in awe-filled worship. We are grateful to partner with you in equipping young and eager minds, nurturing soft and tender hearts, to transform the world for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It’s been another great month and we look forward to seeing the growth of your child each and everyday.
Thanks for all you do,
HCHS Interim Principal

We are currently meeting with the seniors (individually) to make sure they have all the information they need to make decisions regarding their futures. We are encouraging college bound seniors to get their applications in by Thanksgiving vacation to have the best opportunities for financial aid. We are offering to assist non-college bound seniors with career selection, information, and job placement.
We have invited parents to attend a meeting with their 11th grade student. This is our junior check-in meeting, when we discuss topics such as post-high school plans, course selection for senior year, standardized testing, college visits and applications, and financial aid for college. We have emailed the link to each counselor’s calendar for parents to make an appointment. These meetings are all held during the school day, but if you are unable to attend, your student will still have one with his/her counselor and receive all the information.
Throughout the school year, various scholarship opportunities will be posted online through the Counseling Department. A listing of outside scholarships, both regional and national, will be updated as we receive notices of scholarships. Beginning in the second semester, there will be information online about the Holland/Zeeland Community Foundation Scholarships that are open to Holland Christian students and also internal HC scholarships, which are for Holland Christian students only. Be sure to check the Scholarship portion of the Counseling Department website.
