Flipping the calendar to May brings with it a lot of excitement, pre-summertime joys and busy evening schedules. We continue to engage our learners in invigorating experiences both in the building, throughout the grounds and off site on field trips. We love our children and savor this final month of learning and laughing together. Thank you for entrusting us with our children whom we love!
This time of year, as we are already preparing for the 2018-2019 school year, brings with it changes in the staff who will be leading and caring for our children. Be assured every decision which brings about change to our teams comes with much prayerful consideration. We desire to follow God’s call as we serve his mission at Holland Christian. Over the next few weeks we will inform you of the changes, Lord willing, in our staff for next year.
Mrs. Sandy Johnson
Mrs. Johnson has been a kindergarten teacher at South Side Elementary for 37 years. She is a legacy at Holland Christian. When you do the math on that, you get an inkling of an idea of just how many lives, both children and families, she has grown, developed and loved. During her years as a teacher, God has equipped her to academically grow children, partner with parents in honesty as children establish their own independence at school, and she faithfully models a faith-filled walk and commitment to our Heavenly Father. Hanging in the hallways at South Side are two memorials for children who have died while they were students here. Mrs. Johnson was kindergarten teacher to both children, and God equipped her to stand at their graveside, comfort both families and practice the faith we believe in and teach. Pieces of Mrs. Johnson’s heart live in so many people, five-year-olds who walk our hallways still and 42-year-olds who might be sitting at the graduation of their own children this May. Due to changes in enrollment at South Side next year, Mrs. Johnson will not be returning to teach next year. We are profoundly grateful for her years of tenderly loving and equipping children. We pray that God will bless her next endeavors and know that he will continue to use her to share his love and faithfulness to the next generation. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for all you have done and continue to do.

South Side ~ ANNOUNCEMENTS
Multi-Age First/Second Class
As we plan and staff for the next school year already, we are excited to inform you of a new opportunity in two of our grade levels for next year at South Side. This structure is actually not new for South Side or Holland Christian, yet something we have not done in recent years. In order to ensure an excellent and faithful educational experience for all of our students as we assess our current enrollment, student needs, and our shared desire for affordability, we will be running one 1st/2nd combination class in addition to two 1st grade classes and two 2nd grade classes next year at South Side. This will allow for an optimum student to teacher ratio in these grade levels, as well as support our desire for affordability for everyone at Holland Christian. To learn more about our plans for the combination classroom in 1st and 2nd grade at South Side, please read these FAQ’s.

After School & Before School Carpool Reminders
Just a reminder the front entrance doors and south side doors are open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. to access the building. All entrance doors will be locked down the rest of the school day. This is a new system-wide policy. If you need to enter the building after these hours, you must access the building at the front entrance (covered door area). The new security system and camera are on the wall just before the entrance doors. Please push the button and wait at the camera for recognition and further communication. Once you have been cleared to enter, the automatic door will make a clicking sound and will unlock. Please come to the office and sign in before proceeding to other areas of the building. Thank you for your cooperation and helping us keep your children safe!
1. Cars please do not use the entrance off 40th Street between 7:45am – 8:10am, and also 2:45pm and 3:30pm. This is for Bus use only.
2. Make sure the bus circle stays clear of cars at all times. We can make this easier for all if you pull forward as we do during pick-up, so there is plenty of room behind you for others to do the same. Busses need that extra room to turn around and use the 40th street exit and are on a tight route schedule for student drop off and pick up. We have had some close calls when busses swing out to make the turn around and cars have been stopped in the circle. During these drop off and pick up times, students should not be loading or unloading in the traffic circle! This is for your safety as well as the children.
3. If you plan on exiting your vehicle to pick up your child between 2:30pm and the end of the day, please park either North of the bike racks or along the woods side (far west side) of the parking lot. This will keep the loading zone clear for parents to line up for after school parent pick up.
4. When you are in the loading zone area, please do not pull forward (DO NOT LEAVE) until the teacher alerts you to do so. We need to make sure all the students are safely loaded into vehicles within the loading zone, before cars start to move forward!
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping your children safe!
