Middle School August 2021 Newsletter
As I sit in Ouray, Colorado looking out at the mountains, I am blown away by the world that God has created. Today during a hike with my wife to Upper Cascade Falls, I noticed the roots of the junipers and pines that had to dig into the cracks of rocks. The trees had to do this to get nourishment and so they have an anchor so they don’t fall down. The roots are vital to the tree’s life. This year our school’s theme is Rooted.
Ephesians 3:16-19 says “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (NLT)
As believers we have roots that grow down into God’s love as long as we trust in him. God’s love is so immense we can’t even begin to understand it. How cool is that! We need to be rooted in God’s love because we are commanded in Mark 12 to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 NIV
This year we are excited to welcome our incoming 6th graders plus over 20 students who are new to HC! As we embark on a new year, we are implementing a new house system. We got this idea when 5 teachers and myself went to the Ron Clark academy in January of 2020. Last May the 7th grade piloted the House System. In this system, each student and employee of the middle school will be put in one of four houses. The names of the houses are: The Dunes, The Lighthouse, The Windmill, and The Lake. As we go through each day, students can earn points for their house by doing positive things. Points can also be earned during house competitions. The purpose of the House System is to create a positive climate and culture for students and staff. Our hope is that using the House System will help us build character, relationships, and school spirit.
My hope and prayer is that each of us and our HC students can continually trust in God so that we can be rooted in his love! I also am excited to start the new House System as we continually look to improve the positive culture of the Middle School.

If you still have your baton at home, please make sure you bring it in to the office or your first hour teacher on the first day of school. Thanks!
First Day/Week of School Info
Orientation day is August 23 at the middle school from 10:00-2:00 pm. Come have your picture taken for your student ID, walk around the building and find your locker, pick up your schedule, and meet your teachers. You can also turn in any completed physical forms during this time. If you would like to order photos, go to the Geskus photo website and enter the code 2426AIMNISNLAE. Please note, the Middle School yearbook is included in the yearly activity fee and does not need to be ordered separately. Each student will receive one at the end of the school year.
Picture Make-up day (if students miss Orientation Day) will be Thursday, September 9; retakes and BOC pictures will be taken Monday, October 11.
Tuesday, August 24: We start school this year with a full day starting at 8:00 am and ending at 2:55 pm.
Late Start Wednesdays
Students start school a few minutes later each Wednesday so middle school staff can attend meetings from 7:30-8:15 am. Starting on September 1, the start time on Wednesdays is 8:30 am as there is no late start the first week of school. Class will begin at 8:00 am each day of the first week.
Our student schedules will be given to students on Orientation Day, August 23. If you signed up for weekly progress reports, you may have received what looks like your student’s schedule. Please note that schedules are not finished yet and this may change before the first day of school. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The Middle School runs a modified block schedule. This means students take seven classes on Monday/Thursday/Friday, and fewer classes on Tuesday/Wednesday, but for longer blocks of time. All of our Grade Level Daily Schedules are available here.
Join us for our Middle School Parent Night, which will be held on August 31! You’ll receive more information after the school year begins.
Drop off/Pick up
Parent drop off and school/athletics pick up take place on the north side of the building. In the single lane carpool drop off, pull up as far as you can to drop off your child. If you are first in line, pull up to the orange cone that is past the north entrance on the sidewalk. This allows room for the cars behind you to pull up as well. Have your students exit the right side of the vehicle. Thank you.
The bus loop at the front of school is not open for parent drop off during the hours of 7:30-8:15 am and also 2:45-3:15 pm. School doors will be open at 7:30 am for students’ arrival and students need to be picked up by 3:30 pm.
View our school supply lists. Please note: it is recommended that students have an NIV Study Bible for their Bible class. 6th and 8th grade Bible classes are full year classes and 7th grade is a semester class.
Immunizations: Incoming 7th Graders
Please contact your health provider to be sure your student’s immunizations are up to date. All students’ immunizations must be up to date before the first day of school. In compliance with the Michigan Department of Health, Holland Christian Schools will not allow students whose immunizations are not up to date to attend school. Thank you so much for your help with this. Again this year, as per the Public Health Code, each student must have a copy of their most current immunization record and/or copy of their current waiver in their student file for as long as they are enrolled in school. You may email a copy to email@example.com.
Busing is available to Holland Christian students in a variety of different ways, depending on where you live. Holland and HCS South Side Busing cooperate with HCMS and have their own registration forms and fees.If you have not signed up for busing yet, please do that now on The Transportation Page.
- Our hope is that the Rose Park shuttle will be running for both AM and PM pickup times starting on Tuesday, August 24, for the school year. The South Side Transportation will also be up and running for the AM and PM routes on the first day of school.
- Holland busing will begin on August 24 which is their first day of school.
- Zeeland busing will begin on August 31 which is their first day of school.
- Please find additional information and busing registration forms on The Transportation Page.
Final Forms: Athletics
Final Forms link Final Forms is our hub for “All Things HC Athletics.” You’ll find physical forms, sports sign ups, all forms needed to play sports, and can even pay your Pay to Play fee from this site. Please make sure your student athlete is registered and all forms are signed before their first day of practice.
Our fall sports season begins Monday, August 23. Dates, time and locations will be communicated from coaches in the next week. Please see The Middle School Athletics Page for all of our athletic information. This will show you how to register your athlete in Final Forms, which sports are offered when, the sport specific practice/game calendar, and our Athlete Handbook. The physical form, completed by a physician and signed by a parent, is required by the state in order to participate and must be on file in our office before practice begins.
