MS Newsletter – September 2020
What a joy it is to begin a new school year with students in a newly renovated building or with students doing school in the comfort of their home through a new program called HC-Sync. Our staff is truly grateful that we get to teach 247 students this year (82, 85, and 80 in 6th, 7th and 8th respectively). As we begin the year, We’ve witnessed the Middle School staff doing a wonderful job of living out the words in Phillippians 2: 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
In the last two weeks, our in-person staff has prepared for the students as they normally do but have also had to learn and implement new protocols due to COVID and move into a newly renovated building. Our HC-Sync staff has been trained how to best run a school remotely, connected with the in-person teachers and have connected with the families that are enrolled in HC-Sync. All of our staff have done all of these things and have taken the time to help each other and care for all the students as well. As I ponder what they have done, it would be great, if you feel led, to send staff members a small thank you note expressing the appreciation you have for them and the efforts that they have put forth last spring and beyond as we all continue to strive for what is best for the students.
I also want to take the time to thank you, the parents, for your patience and trust as you have cared for your kids and helped them with online learning in the spring and as you continue to nurture the hearts or your sons and daughters. You have been a blessing to us as we partner together to make the 2020/21 school year one of the best school years ever.
This year we welcome Kyra Short as our counselor and Nickie DeVries, from Whitinsville Christian School, as our 6th grade Bible/Spanish teacher. We also welcome the 6th grade teachers: Katie Boer and Jamie Dannenberg from Pine Ridge and David Nieuwsma and Laura Smith from Rose Park. Our new HC-sync teachers are Carlie Shults for 6th grade and Corey Scheffers for 7th and 8th grade.

Counselor/Social Worker Forms
This form will allow students to have a direct link to Mrs. Travers and Mrs. Short. While emails and phone calls are always welcome, completing a referral form helps to ensure that student needs are fully documented and addressed.
Updating Parent Demographic Information
Student Drop off/Pick Up
As we continue to work on going from clunky to smooth with drop off and pick up, please make sure that the first car stops at the bike racks. This will help us not have such a back up in our parking lot. Also, please remember to drop off your students like it is a nascar pit stop so we can get traffic in and out of our parking lot quicker. Finally, think about going right as it is the right thing to do. It is helpful to pull in and to leave going right so the flow of traffic is smooth.
Calling All Colors
In fitting with our theme “Woven Together,” Holland Christian Middle School invites all students to join and be part of a group called Calling All Colors. Our theme encourages us to imagine a beautiful tapestry. The hundreds of thousands of strands of string. Different colors, different lengths, woven together to make something beautiful. Something that one string could not do or become. But guided by the hand of a skilled weaver, one strand added to another becomes something greater, something beautiful.
Calling all Colors invites students of all ethnicities and races-White, Black, Latino, Asian and more, to join together in learning and listening to the experiences of People of Color and developing and implementing school wide goals in effort to create a culture of inclusion in our school.
Meetings will be held once a month during Achievement Hour and broken up by grade level
- September 14: 6th Grade
- September 21: 7th Grade
- September 28: 8th Grade
