Rose Park News 5/10/19

Dear Rose Park Family and Friends,

Where in the world do I begin describing all of the ways and places that we have experienced God this week at Rose Park during this Tulip Time week? Truly, there are too many to count. God has been present by his Spirit in every frame of this week in and outside of the classroom. I even believe we were able to transform the world for Jesus Christ in small and large ways during Thursday’s parade with lots of smiles, waves, and greetings. The kindness, joy, and love of our students was grace-breathing to all we met and greeted along the parade route.

I am so looking forward to our end-of-year all HCS gathering next week Tuesday at 9AM at the high school. You may remember that we began the year in convocation all together, preschool-12th grade, and prayed, sang, and listened to God’s Word. We want to bookend our year with another celebration all together, again singing, praying, listening, and blessing. Come and join us; you are welcome at the high school gym, Tuesday, at 9AM. We will be blessed, again, I am expectant.

Now, may you bless and be blessed this weekend in rest, recreation, and in awe-filled worship. This has been another growth, meaning and joy-filled week at Rose Park, partnering with you and the rest of the staff, equipping young and eager minds, nurturing soft and tender hearts, to transform the world for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Note to K-5 Parents

The staff and I are working on placement of students for the next school year. Our teachers intimately know our students, their personalities, learning styles, social relationships, and more, and meet to prayerfully, carefully, and intentionally create class lists that will foster the best possible experience for each student next year. If your child has special needs or there are circumstances of which we should be aware, a letter or email should be written and received no later than Monday, May 13. Please do not request a specific teacher or personally ask your child’s teacher to make a specific placement for you. These requests should come through the office. We invite you to share your student’s circumstance or need for placement consideration by writing a letter or email to Mr. Brandsen at with this information. Mr. Brandsen will acknowledge the receipt of each request. If you do not receive this acknowledgement within a day of sending the email, please inquire in the office.

Whether you are a parent, grandparent, alumnus, friend, or supporter, we would love to welcome you along with all of our Preschool-12 grade students in a time of celebration, prayer, praise, and listening to God’s Word at the end of this school year. Various Holland Christian students, staff, and community members will lead in song, prayer, and devotion. Come and join us Tuesday, May 14, 9AM in the high school gym for this very special convocation service. You will be blessed!

HC Summer Camps Update

HC Summer Slide Party Program

Have you ever been blessed with too much of a good thing? We’ve had so many parents who are eager to support their fledgling readers with our Summer Slide initiative, that Mrs. Rynsburger thought she might get hives trying to collate thousands of books (literally!) for our readers! This is a GREAT problem to have! Insert our Pine Ridge POD group! The photo above captures something pretty beautiful! Our 3rd-6th graders came to the rescue organizing and stapling hundreds of books for their South Side/Rose Park friends! We have a wonderful supply of books ready for our signed-up readers and MORE! If you would like to have your child participate and have yet to RSVP, please read through the following details:

South Side, Forest School and Rose Park would like to invite you to join us in redefining “summer slide” for our kindergarten through second grade children. Students and teachers have worked so diligently throughout this school year developing our children as readers. Parents have been a huge support in this exciting effort and we thank you! It won’t be long and we’ll be sending our students out of school for all sorts of wonderful summer adventures! However, particularly for our emergent readers, summer can impose a looming threat to young readers’ newly acquired reading ability. Not only must children read regularly throughout the summer in order to maintain their ability, they must also read books at their individual instructional reading level. To that end, we’d love to offer you a brand new invitation! Current kindergarten through second grade parents, you are invited to participate in our HC Summer Slide Party Program! What does that entail you ask? Well, I’m glad you asked!  We will begin, for parents who RSVP on behalf of their child by May 15 via email, with a 30-minute crash course in reading instruction with Miska. We’ll hold our reading instruction night for parents, both South Side and Rose Park, on May 28 at 6:00 in the gym at South Side. At this meeting, South Side and Rose Park parents who have notified us via RSVP by May 15 will receive 50 paper books! One book for every week day of the summer at each child’s instructional level. Miska will share our grade-level reading goals with you and help you become familiar with techniques and strategies you might find helpful over the summer months. Now, here comes the real fun part! Because our students’ reading levels won’t suffer from the typical slide downhill due to consistent, targeted reading, let’s send our hard working readers down a slide! We will rent a big inflatable slide and hold a Summer Slide Party on the playground of Rose Park at the end of July! At this fun event, your child can bring their favorite book to the playground to read to some of our teachers and then, set that book aside and do some fun sliding!

Because the cost of the slide and individualized books are outside of our operating costs, we ask that you contribute $15 to participate. In order to prepare your child’s personalized reading books and goals, we’ll need some advance notice of your family’s interest. Please RSVP by May 15 to and we’ll begin your child’s materials!

Hmmm…this is brand new. What questions do you have? Feel free to send Miska an email or call either school office for clarification.

Happy Reading and Happy Sliding!

New Athletic Information for 2019-20

Attention current 5th & 6th Grade students who are interested in joining the MS sports teams for the 2019-20 school year!  Holland Christian will be Rolling out a new athletic online registration system. Holland Christian Schools is now partnered with FinalForms, an athlete online registration company.  This email notification is for all parents of current students grades 5-11, but intended only for students interested in participating in any sport for the 2019-20 school year (grades 6-12… 6th graders are limited to participation in cross country, tennis, swimming & diving and track & field).  We are excited about this new relationship with benefits for our athletes and families including a streamlined athletic physical process, more efficient communication and online pay to participate fee collection. Your family data is saved season-to-season and year-to-year… meaning you should never have to enter the same information twice!

April 15 is the first day students can complete the MHSAA required athletic physical for the 2019-20 school year in order to participate on a school athletic team.  Our partnership with FinalForms requires you to register your child online for sports at Holland Christian in order to print the needed MHSAA physical form for your MD/DO/PA/NP to complete.  With April 15 fast approaching, we want to ensure parents understand the new process for registering online before completing the annual MHSAA physical. If you already signed up for Holland Christian’s physical night on April 30 or plan to have your child’s athletic physical completed at your primary care physician before participation, please register your athlete online before doing so by following the instructions at the following link:

Procedures and requirements such as these are important for our organization to run efficiently and safely.  We hope your experience is streamlined after the initial learning curve of the new registration process. Thank you for your efforts to assist us in extending the classroom and put knowing God on display through athletics at Holland Christian.

Go Maroons!  Dave Engbers, Athletic Director
