Rose Park News 12/21/18
Dear Rose Park Family and Friends,
We’re almost there, almost to Christmas. 4 sleeps to go! I’m still reveling in Wednesday’s 1st Grade Christmas chapel we experienced with all of our Preschool-6th grade Rose Park students, staff, and some parents and grandparents. Our first graders told the Christmas Story in song, recitation, and story so well, and like none other. May we all recount and live the Gospel with such abandon, joy, wonder, authenticity, and enthusiasm.
In all of the programs, concerts, parties, and activity of the season, I hope that you have found, and will still find time to spend in the candlelight of Advent. I end this season with the same encouragement with which we bagan. The Christian calendar helps us to find some healthy rhythm in the daily-ness of life, and the often-hectic pace of our culture. Advent waiting, expectation, and anticipation is a healthy antidote to the crammed-full calendar and immediate gratification spirit all around us. During this Christmas vacation, I continue to urge you to make time with your family in special family devotions, in pre-bedtime routines, in turning off the TV and unplugging from all electronic devices, to simply be together. Share those favorite Christmas stories from your childhood. Read those favorite Christmas books for the umpteenth time. Tell your story of Jesus’ coming into your life, and what you most look forward to when he returns again. Stoke the eager anticipation of your children for Jesus’ coming at Christmas, as well as his future coming to make all things whole and fully good again. It is in the light of Advent and Christmas that we see things more truly. We can peer through the darkness more hopefully. I pray for you to experience a wonderful and blessed Christmas with your children and family, and a healthy, peaceful, laughter-filled, and blessed vacation. In that spirit, I love this poem by E. Lee Phillips:
Lord, do not let us do more
If in doing less we might do it better.
Do not let us acquire more
If in living with less
We might know Thee better.
We are easily swayed by size,
Equating quantity with quality,
Wealth with security,
And applause with popularity.
Forgive us for spreading ourselves thin
For the sake of appearances.
Permit us to amend our ways
Lest we miss the Babe in the stable,
The Lad in the carpenter’s shop,
The Teacher on the hillside,
And the Christ on the Cross. Amen.
–E. Lee Phillips
Now, in that spirit, may you bless and be blessed this whole vacation with your families in Christmas rest, joy, and peace, recreation, and in awe-filled worship. This has been another growth, tradition, celebration, meaning and joy-filled week at Rose Park, partnering with you and the rest of the staff, equipping young and eager minds, nurturing soft and tender hearts, to transform the world for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Light of the World has come, and is coming again. And the darkness can never overcome it. Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
