Rose Park News Blog, 3/2/18
Dear Rose Park Family and Friends,
A couple of weeks ago, it was 2nd grade book characters, students dressed up as characters from their books, who came into my office to share who each one was with great excitement for the books they had read. This week it was 4th grade Market Day where students make products which they market and sell to the rest of the student body at Rose Park for an afternoon. They learn key principles of supply and demand, profit and loss, and more. This year I learned of two students specifically who experienced unique and special dimensions to add to their learning experience. One student talked with her mom about the privilege of such ready and easy access to the resources needed to create her product. What an incredible life lesson! Another student decided to donate half of her proceeds toward clean water in Nepal. I’ve never seen that before in my time at Rose Park! What a wonderful heart and attitude for life!
I often wish I could share what I see and hear and experience more than in a photo or a tweet (@principalrod). I wish I could have you with me. I wish I could take prospective parents with me so they could see the kind of engaging, nurturing, transformative, and faith-infused educational experience students receive at Rose Park throughout their days. We are praying for even more students next year. We have room! Do you know of anyone still making the decision, deciding where they might send their kindergarten student, or any grade for that matter, next year? By all means, please send them my way! I love to give tours to prospective parents and tell the Rose Park and Holland Christian story.
As always, may you bless and be blessed this weekend in rest, recreation, and in awe-filled worship. This has been another growth, meaning and joy-filled week at Rose Park, partnering with you and the rest of the staff, equipping young and eager minds, nurturing soft and tender hearts, to transform the world for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Talking with Kids about Tragedy
It is painfully obvious that the culture and world we live in today is so much different than most of us experienced growing up. Are you struggling at all knowing how to talk with your children about events like last week’s Florida school shooting? Bob VandePol from Pine Rest recorded a great interview with Miranda this week about how to talk with kids about tragedy. His insights are so sensitive and wise for children of all ages. I appreciated the interview a great deal and immediately thought of you, our Rose Park parents. Here is the link for you to see the interview, as well. I encourage you all to take a few minutes to watch this interview, and hopefully you will find it as insightful and helpful for your parenting and families as I did.

BE THE MATCH
Date: March 9, 2018 from 5:30-8:00
Location: Rose Park and Pine Ridge School’s Fun Night
As a school body, we are celebrating with Dirk Hollebeek, as he has received a match for a bone marrow transplant. We have decided to partner with the BE THE MATCH bone marrow program and “Pay-It-Forward” by adding donors to the registry that has blessed so many families. We encourage you to consider giving back to someone that may need this life-saving gift just as someone is sacrificing for Dirk Hollebeek.
If you would like to join this matching program, you will need to meet three criteria.
- Age 18-44
- In general good health
- Be willing to help anyone with a transplant need.
Want to join this registry: Please come to Rose Park or Pine Ridge schools on Friday night, March 9 from 5:30-8:00. Fill out some consent forms and have a simple swab of the cheek. There is no cost to join and we will have volunteers ready to help you!
Important Illness Procedures Reminder
With flu season upon us we want to remind you of a few guidelines we have in place at Rose Park. If your child is not feeling well, please keep him/her home. Students must be fever free for 24 hours without use of a fever reducing medication before he/she may return to school. Please let us know each day your child will be absent. You may call and talk to us directly, leave a message on the 24 hour-a-day voice mail, or you may email Mrs. Steenwyk at firstname.lastname@example.org or Mrs. Chase at email@example.com. If your child has an appointment during the day, please email the teacher or send a note stating the time you will pick up your child. We will have your child waiting for your arrival in the office.
