South Side Newsletter – October 2021
I can not believe that we are already into October. The first month of school has gone by so quickly. At the end of September, teachers each meet with me and talk through all of their students with great detail. They have spent this first full month of school getting to know your child and how they have been created uniquely as an individual image bearer of Christ. Your child’s teacher has spent time studying your child to find out…
- what they like to do at recess
- who they play with
- what subjects are their favorite
- where they shine academically
- which subjects they struggle with
- what are things that make them happy
- things that also can make them sad
- what they do when they are not in school
It has been fun to get into all the classrooms to see the high level of student engagement with the fun and unique learning experiences that our teachers have designed with your child in mind. I am reminded each day that our teachers are one of the biggest factors that make South Side the amazing place that it is. They take everything they know about your child and they try to build learning experiences that are going to be helpful for them to live into what God has designed them to become. If you have not already checked out your child’s classroom blog on Fridays, please do so. The blogs are filled with what your child is learning as well as fun pictures of special activities. It can give you a small glimpse of what happens day to day at South Side.
When I think of our partnership and how our teachers are “studiers” of your child, I can not help but think of Psalm 139:13-18 (The Passion Translation) and how God has such a special plan for each child in our care:
13. You formed my innermost being, shaping my delicate inside
and my intricate outside,
and wove them all together in my mother’s womb.
14. I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex!
Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking.
It simply amazes me to think about it!
How thoroughly you know me, Lord!
15. You even formed every bone in my body
when you created me in the secret place;
carefully, skillfully you shaped me from nothing to something.
16. You saw who you created me to be before I became me!
Before I’d ever seen the light of day,
the number of days you planned for me
were already recorded in your book.
17–18. Every single moment you are thinking of me!
How precious and wonderful to consider
that you cherish me constantly in your every thought!
O God, your desires toward me are more
than the grains of sand on every shore!
When I awake each morning, you’re still with me.
We consider it a true joy, blessing, and honor to equip your child’s mind, nurture their heart in such a way for them to transform the world for Jesus Christ.
K-2nd Grade Wednesday Volunteers Needed
We have service opportunities available and we are in great need of parents to help monitor the playground, lunch, and lunch recess. Some of you may have already signed up with your child’s teacher to help with lunch. If you did, they will share that information with me so you do not need to sign up again. If you’re interested complete the Volunteer Signup Form. All parent volunteers will need to complete a background check through our HR Department which will be set up for you prior to helping at school. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the office for proper forms. Thank you in advance as we look forward to having you back in our building!
South Side’s picture retake day is Wednesday, November 3, 8:30-9:00. Please note you will need to return the complete package to the photographer when requesting your retakes.
News from Food Services
Breakfast will be offered as students enter the building each morning to take to their class. Students must choose a fruit along with 1 other choice—we encourage our students to take 3 items. The FREE breakfast menu choices are:
- Fresh, canned fruit options and or 100% juice,
- Low sugar cereal bowls or muffins
- Yogurt, cheese choices, or boiled eggs
- 1% white milk
Preschool students will be offered breakfast in their classroom when they arrive and, as before, lunch will be FREE. We will continue the grab-and-go options for students who have a ½ day as well as for siblings.
Lunch will be free as well with all the favorite options as before! To see all food service options for all our schools see the back to school food service options flyer. The Lunch Menu for October is on the Hot Lunch page.
Food and Nutrition Services Update
As our school foodservice programs are starting to begin, we are facing unprecedented issues with the supply chain that may cause us to alter our posted menus with little or no notice. We are working closely with our distributors and manufacturers to secure both the food and supply items needed to support our program.
While it is our intention to serve the posted menu each day at every school, supply issues may not make this possible throughout the school year, until the supply issues are resolved. We will always attempt to substitute the scheduled menu item with another that is as similar as possible to the extent we are able to do so. Please talk to your children about how the posted menu may change. We will do our best to communicate menu changes via email, when we are notified of product changes.
Medications at School
If your child needs to take medication at school, we need an updated form signed by their physician each school year. If you have not done this yet, please do so asap. You are welcome to contact our school nurse, Hendrina Cupery at firstname.lastname@example.org. She will help you set up a plan for the office to assist in administering the medication. For safety reasons, Holland Christian Schools is not able to dispense any medication (prescription or non-prescription) to our students without a doctor’s order. Thank you!
