FS/SS/PR Newsletter-April 12, 2019
“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” John 13:17.
This Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday. We remember Jesus’ triumphant entrance into the Holy City. Palm Sunday draws us into all of the soulful emotions of Holy Week. It is our greatest desire, as parents and staff, to point our children’s hearts and minds to the greatest gift in life: Jesus Christ. Jesus life, sacrifice and resurrection. This week the feet of our second graders were washed by their teacher even as the disciples’ feet were washed by their teacher. In observing this special, quiet moment between child and teacher my throat clenched tight, eyes clouded with tears and I’m pretty sure my heart exploded. These children are so deeply loved. Above all they are loved by their Father in Heaven but also by so many adults God has placed in their lives.
It has truly been one of the greatest joys in my life to live, serve and love at South Side. You accepted me into this beautiful community six years ago and together, I believe, we have been faithful to God’s bidding. We have seen God do great things here at South Side. I thank you from the very bottom of my heart for your love, your trust, your friendship and your partnership. I appreciate being part of your family’s story. Children are the greatest blessing God grants us this side of heaven. It gives me great joy to be able to tell you that your child has been and will continue to be loved by his/her teachers, staff and my friend, Mr. Howell, next year!
Dr. Bultman shared our administrative change for next year. Much planning, discussion and prayer has gone into this design. With this new plan, we are able to “right size” our administrative team and serve our community well. Mr. Howell’s principalship of South Side and Pine Ridge will allow for a cohesive programming and experience for our children and families. I trust Mr. Howell entirely and am very excited for him as well as for South Side and Pine Ridge. His love for children and for God is so very evident. As it is with all transitions in life, we will take great comfort in following God’s guidance and providential care. I am confident of God’s leading, sustaining, and providing for South Side, Pine Ridge and for the Holland Christian community.
Have an enjoyable, rest-filled or action-packed weekend. We look forward to seeing you again on Monday!
Crystal Bowman, author of numerous children’s books, is meeting with our students on Wednesday, April 17. For more information on Crystal or to order more of her books, please visit www.crystalbowman.com. The South Side visit will be at 9:30 a.m. and Pine Ridge visit will be at 10:30am.
Mark your Calendars – Spring Program
Our South Side and Pine Ridge elementary schools join together to present our Spring Program on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Christ Memorial Church at 7:00 P.M. This is a very special event to invite Grandparents and Friends to join you! This Great Program is for all to enjoy. The students are excited for this event and are practicing the songs to share with you. This combined “choir” of voices and enthusiasm is a joy to witness and sure to put a smile not only on your face but in your heart as well. Watch for informational map coming home soon!
South Side and Pine Ridge Parent Board Openings
Are you looking for a way to connect with the school, get involved in events, and meet fellow parents? Why not consider joining the South Side and Pine Ridge Parent Board. We are currently looking for members for the 2019-2020 school year. For more information please message Kate Holloway on our fb page: HC South Side & Pine Ridge Parent Team.
HCHS Spring Theatre
The HCHS spring theatre season is well underway, and this year we’re producing TWO shows: Steel Magnolias and The Yellow Boat. They are each an hour long and will be presented as a double feature with an intermission in-between. Both are family appropriate but recommended for ages 8 & up (due to some heavy content – show descriptions can be found here). Tickets are on sale now at hcs.ludus.com
Both productions are beautifully and sensitively written and show communities dealing with the ups and downs of life. There are heavy moments, but both are told in artistic, creative ways that emphasize hope and healing. You won’t want to miss these student performances.
The performances are coming up soon: April 26 & 27 @ 7pm! Tickets are General Admission, so you will not be picking seats when you buy your tickets.
April Lunch Menu
As the end of the school year approaches we will continue to remind/ask you to please take a minute to check your child’s lunch balance. If you have not made a deposit in a while and/or want to know your balance, please email Sue email@example.com or go to www.sendmoneytoschool.com. If you have not been getting account updates from us, we may not have your most recent email address in Power School. Please log into Power School to check your pertinent information.
If you are having financial difficulties, you may always apply for lunch benefits at www.lunchapp.com. It is easy & confidential, a response will be emailed to you within 24 hours of completing the needed information.
The lunch program is a pre-pay program and we need to be sure all accounts are paid to date before the last day of school.

Book Back Party
In the scope and sequence of learning at South Side, we have just engaged in our last big non-fiction/research units. That means the library is once again under a mountain of beautiful books. We were blessed with the volunteer hours of several parents and grandparents a few weeks ago to help us beautify our library! Could we graciously put out the ask once again? If you are able and willing to once again help reshelve some books in our library, would you please contact Miska at email@example.com We are hoping to hold the “Book Back Party” on Thursday, April 18 at 10:00AM. THANK YOU for your consideration!
Kindergarten Visiting Day
Mark your calendar for our Kindergarten Visiting Day on May 17th, from 8:30am – 9:30am. There will be more information coming out the beginning of May.
Tulip Time Fun Run
It’s tough to believe when our temperature peeks right around 11º in the afternoon, BUT spring time is on the way! It always comes! And with it comes Tulip Time! Last year we had a group of Mini Maroon Platoon Runners who participated in the Tulip Time Fun Run. This event is in the works again this year! If you have a mini runner who would like to participate in the excitement of Tulip Time, take a peek at these details! The Kid’s Fun Run will take place on May 4 at 9:00 am. Put a maroon shirt on your child (if you’re plumb out of maroon shirts, stop at the South Side office, we have a selection you can pick from) and lace up those shoes! This fun run is intended for children 8 and under. The running and playing our children do every day at recess is sufficient training for the course (it’s less than a 1 mile run). If you register before April 15, you’re guaranteed a t-shirt!
You can register here. Our team name is: MiniMaroons. The password: gohc
Please don’t hesitate to find Miska if you have registration troubles. In the meantime, hold onto the hope that spring WILL return! …one day….we think…. 😉

ATHLETIC 2019/2020 Information
Attention current 5th & 6th Grade students who are interested in joining the MS sports teams for the 2019-20 school year! Holland Christian will be Rolling out a new athletic online registration system. Holland Christian Schools is now partnered with FinalForms, an athlete online registration company. This email notification is for all parents of current students grades 5-11, but intended only for students interested in participating in any sport for the 2019-20 school year (grades 6-12… 6th graders are limited to participation in cross country, tennis, swimming & diving and track & field). We are excited about this new relationship with benefits for our athletes and families including a streamlined athletic physical process, more efficient communication and online pay to participate fee collection. Your family data is saved season-to-season and year-to-year… meaning you should never have to enter the same information twice!
April 15 is the first day students can complete the MHSAA required athletic physical for the 2019-20 school year in order to participate on a school athletic team. Our partnership with FinalForms requires you to register your child online for sports at Holland Christian in order to print the needed MHSAA physical form for your MD/DO/PA/NP to complete. With April 15 fast approaching, we want to ensure parents understand the new process for registering online before completing the annual MHSAA physical. If you already signed up for Holland Christian’s physical night on April 30 or plan to have your child’s athletic physical completed at your primary care physician before participation, please register your athlete online before doing so by following the instructions at the following link: https://www.hollandchristian.org/athletics/handbooks-forms/
If you still desire to sign up for an appointment at the Holland Christian physical night on April 30, 2019 for the 2019-20 school year, please sign up at the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c4eafaf2aa46-athletic
Procedures and requirements such as these are important for our organization to run efficiently and safely. We hope your experience is streamlined after the initial learning curve of the new registration process. Thank you for your efforts to assist us in extending the classroom and put knowing God on display through athletics at Holland Christian. Go Maroons! Dave Engbers, Athletic Director
