Advent Season

Our classrooms typically bustle with the busyness and chatter of engaged learning. But there have been some unique morning routines recently. An observer might find here and there the classroom lights are turned off. The noise is stilled. The classroom takes on a special atmosphere. Something important and unique is happening. The season of advent is being observed. The class and teacher are gathered together around candlelight. Emotions are engaged. Voices are hushed. The Holy Spirit is moving among even our littlest ones. Candles are being lit to demonstrate for our children that, in the midst of the darkness, God is here. God is with us. In some of the reflections of peace, love, hope and joy, our children are heard offering their own reflections about what this means in their own lives to experience God in the darkness and in times of waiting. God is our known in the unknown. Our children share how they see the hand of God even in the midst of their version of chaos. Already they are learning what is means to be a people in waiting and claiming the promises of a God who reigns even in the mess. Our God who is present in the chaos. Whose love and light are stronger than the anger and bleakness we sometimes see in this world. As an adult observer, bearing witness to these precious moments stirs my soul and my eyes cloud with tears. It is both inspirational and humbling to hear our little ones speak God’s truth in the simplest of terms. Despite what it may seem to us at times, this is a simple truth: God is with us. Always. In all things. I encourage you to talk with your children in this advent season. Take a moment to still from the Christmas hustle bustle. Sit together in God’s presence and in God’s light. Our children are exploring and claiming a powerful truth in this advent season. While we wait in hope for a day that is coming in which shalom will be restored, we bask in the light of truth that God is here with us.

Holland Public Bussing

HP Bussing will run routes as normal all week next week AM & PM.  We had an error in our schedule on the website, that will be corrected.

Preparing A Table

As you know, our school theme this year is Preparing A Table. We are working each day in different ways to understand what it means to both prepare a table to invite others to as well as to be invited to a table prepared for us. This year, on April 23, our preschool through fourth grade will prepare a spring program for your family. Mrs. Boer would like to play a video of pictures and clips of our families preparing a table for others in their homes. If you invite others to break bread at your table, would you be willing to take and share a picture or clip for the montage she would like to put together for the program? Please send your picture or clip to Mrs Boer’s email at sboer@hollandchristian.org Thank you!

Upcoming Concert Announcement

The High School Music Department invites you to its annual band, orchestra and choir Christmas concert on Saturday, December 15, in the Jack H. Miller Center for the Musical Arts, located on the campus of Hope College. We will be offering two performance times for those who would like to attend: one at 2:00 pm and one at 4:00 pm. Beginning Monday, November 19, a link will be posted on the Holland Christian homepage that will allow attendees to make a reservation for which concert they will attend. Those who do not have access to the internet will be able to make reservations through the high school front office. The number of reservations for each of the performances will be limited. In this way we hope to be able to offer a seat to everyone who would like to attend. We look forward to sharing in the celebration of our Savior’s birth through our music.

Kids Food Basket

This week in our chapel time together we explored what it means to “preach the gospel always and when necessary use words”. Sometimes, we share the gospel with others in our actions. Our students will be put into action on Wednesday, December 19. They are hearing and working to understand what it means to go home from school during Christmas break and face food insecurities rather than a house full of family and Christmas toys. As servants of Christ, we are then called into action. Through the work of Kids Food Basket, we can stand up and help! On Wednesday, December 19, each class will pack food into decorated bags for children who likely live and play very close by. We can help alleviate some of their discomfort and insecurity by sending them home from school with food in their backpacks. We can preach the gospel of hope and love through our actions. We have tables full of food donations thanks to your giving hearts. We are collecting the following items through Wednesday, December 19.

Items we would like to collect:

  • Boxes of Cheerios
  • Bulk Pretzels
  • Bulk Cheez-It crackers or Goldfish crackers
  • Bags of raisins
  • Snack Sized Zipper-lock bags
  • Brown Lunch Bags
