Southside and Pine Ridge moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles…all are welcome to come after morning drop-off for a time of fellowship. Holland Christian and Zeeland Christian School are partnering together for a showing of the film SCREENAGERS on September 25 at 7 pm in the HCHS Auditorium. Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. Please join us for this important event! We especially encourage parents with children in 5th-12th grade to attend this event. Check out the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/215750 447

This annual event has become a favorite. Students will be asked to collect pledges from Family, friends, and neighbors.  They will then participate in a 45 minute walk at the high school track, in which they may walk, jog, or run around the track.  During the walk there will be games and activities for the kids to participate in as well. The event will be held during the school day on September 26th from 1pm to 2:15 PM at the HCHS Track. Parents are invited to come cheer students on and enjoy an afternoon of fun.  Pledge forms and money must be turned in by Wednesday, September 19th.  Extra Pledge forms are available in the school office.

Hot Lunch Negative Balances

A friendly reminder that school food service is a prepay program.  We are noticing that families have not deposited money into their child’s account yet this year….however they are enjoying hot lunch each day.   We would so appreciate– if you would take responsibility for your child’s meal account balance.   You may drop off a check at the school office or go onto sendmoneytoschool.com and make a payment on line with your child(ren)’s ID number.  You may pay by credit card at the SMTS site.
It’s never too late to apply for meal benefits.  If you received benefits last year, you must reapply each year.  Go to lunchapp.com and choose your district that oversees your food service.   If you have never applied for benefits and feel you may qualify…go to the site and review household  income and family size to determine if you may be eligible.  Thank you for supporting our programs, we enjoy serving your students!

MIP Moms in Prayer Group

Please share your ideas for teaching an ACE class with our coordinator, Sue Vos (svos@hollandchristian.org).

A note from the administration office, tuition invoices will be arriving in your mailbox mid to late September for the 2018-2019 school year.  If you expect to see an invoice and have not received one by October 5, please let our office know by calling 616-820-2805 or email tvanderkolk@hollandchristian.org.

Medical Information Reminder

Parents: if your child has a medical plan on file or takes meds at school, we need an updated form signed by their physician each school year.  So, if you have not done this yet, please do so ASAP.   You are welcome to contact our school nurse, Jane Borr (janbor@hollandhospital.org).  She will help you set up a plan for the office to assist in administering the medication. For safety reasons, Holland Christian Schools is not able to dispense any medication (prescription or non-prescription) to our students without a doctor’s order.  Thank you for your help!

Story Reader Organizer

We are so appreciative of all of the volunteers who have offered to read to our children! We have many returned slips from parents, grandparents and friends! Mrs. Haig has organized this cadre of volunteers for many years and she is interested in passing on that mantel. She is willing to show any interested party all of her tips and tricks to assign readers to classes, once a month. It’s a low-level/high-impact commitment. Does this sound like a role you might be curious about? Please contact Mrs. Haig at chaig@hollandchristian.org or Miska at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org

Grandparents/Friends Day

The South Side teachers have a creative idea…we THINK this will be adorable but we need some help. Children will be singing “If I Were A Butterfly” for their grandparents/friends (shhh….don’t give it away! 😉 ) and we’re looking for a few children who have certain animal costumes and might be willing to step into the limelight during their line in the song. No solos. Just sing with the choir in costume. Do any of you have a butterfly costume AND a child willing to wear the costume for the praise and worship time on stage? We’re also looking for a child willing to wear a fish costume, an elephant, a kangaroo, an octopus (I know, right?!?!) and a fuzzy wuzzy bear. If you happen to have any of these animal costumes at home, or anything close to that animal, AND your child is willing to don the goods, would you please email Miska at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org  Be sure to follow up with the reviews from your parents after the special day. We think it’s going to be pretty special <3 Thank you!

Carpool/Parent Pick up Procedure

Student safety must be, and remains our primary concern for everyone during student drop-off and dismissal at Pine Ridge. Our students, like any pedestrians, are defenseless against a moving vehicle. Do not assume anything as a driver. Remain alert always, and continue to scan and be aware of any and all students who may be around your vehicle at any given time as you slowly proceed.

Please communicate this information to any and all who may be involved in transporting your student(s) to and from school. All of us must be vigilant in observing these simple rules:

The drive along 40th is for bus lane only.
The drive off Graafschap road is for carpool vehicles only.

Before School

Use the Graafschap drive for dropping off your students. Please pull forward along the sidewalk (in front of our gym) at the curb. Do not stop anywhere on the traffic circle by the main entrance. Yield to the busses.
Do not park, attended or unattended, in the drive longer than to safely let your students out of your vehicle.
Park only in designated parking lot spots if you are getting out of your vehicle with your students. These would be the parking spaces along the grassy area to the west of the drive.

After School

Remain in your vehicles as we direct your students to your car during after-school carpool. Do not get out of your cars. We will get your students to you. Catch the staff member in the middle of the loading zone to get your child(ren) who do not see you on their own.
Generally, we only load students in the “loading zone” as indicated by the solid white lines painted across the drive, and by signs on the sidewalk next to the drive. When all cars are loaded in the loading zone, a teacher will dismiss each file of cars.
When people are moving, cars are not; when cars are moving, people are not. Once your car is in the loading zone, lock it down, and do not move again until invited to do so by the staff member at the front of the loading zone.
If you are walking with your child(ren) to the parking lot, do not walk through the carpool lines. Rather, cross in front of the carpool lines only when we are loading students, waiting, of course, when we are dismissing cars.
Remember these rules are for the safety of all of our children. At times, it will mean we will have to be patient. Thank you!
