Please look for pledge packets coming home today in your child’s backpack.  Please review the content, start collecting pledges, and warming up those walking shoes.  This annual event has become a favorite.

Elementary Handbook

Whether you are new or experienced at South Side or Pine Ridge, for your convenience, here is a link to our Elementary Handbook found on the HC website. Please refer to the handbook for general information, or with specific questions you may have about life at South Side or Pine Ridge.

Student Absences

Please report to us if your child(ren) is going to be absent.  This needs to be done each day they will not be in school.  Also, we would appreciate it if they were reported in by 8:45 AM, but you can call and leave a message anytime before that time.  If you do not call us, and if the child’s teacher does not know about the absence, we will try to call you. (This policy is to protect your child–we want to ensure your child’s safe arrival at school.)

Entry System

For those of you new to our school, please note that we have a video intercom entry system at the front entrance door of of all our buildings.  Entrance into the building (during school days, from 8:30 AM- 3:00 PM) is only through the front door under the large canopy, and will require a simple push of a button.  Upon seeing the person at the door, the secretary will inquire who it is and release the lock.  Please realize this system is NOT put in place to inconvenience parents or students; instead, we use this system because Holland Christian places a high priority on student safety. Utilizing a video intercom entry system is just one more thing we can do to put safety first.

Medical Information Reminder

Parents: if your child has a medical plan on file or takes meds at school, we need an updated form signed by their physician each school year.  So, if you have not done this yet, please do so ASAP.   You are welcome to contact our school nurse, Jane Borr (  She will help you set up a plan for the office to assist in administering the medication. For safety reasons, Holland Christian Schools is not able to dispense any medication (prescription or non-prescription) to our students without a doctor’s order.  Thank you for your help!

Holland Public Bussing Important Information

Holland Public busing starts Tuesday, September 4.  Parents who signed up for HP Bussing, you will be getting your schedule from Holland Public Transportation by the end of the week.  We apologies for the delay, Holland Public Schools is dealing with some logistics issues.

If you desire busing for your student but have not yet signed up through Holland Public transportation, you are technically past their June due date. However, if you register now, your student may be able to begin riding later in September. To sign up, go to the HC Transportation page (under Holland Public busing).

Important To Do Today

It is imperative that you update your demographic information in PowerSchool now with your latest and most accurate contact information. Simply go in your browser to, and, if you are a returning parent, log in with your personal log in and password. If you have difficulty, click the “If you are having trouble…” link to retrieve your log in information. If you are a first-time parent, create a login for yourself. Then, either an “update demographic screen” will automatically pop up, or simply click the “change demographics” button on the left of the screen. This information is necessary for field trip participation, emergency response and treatment, student photo permission, and for the office to easily be able to contact a parent or guardian as needed or desired. When listing your child’s emergency contacts, please be sure to list two contacts other than yourself. Again, please do this today to ensure that your child’s teacher has the most accurate contact information for you. The teachers do a lot of communicating with parents especially at the start of the year, and we want to make sure that you receive all of this communication. Thank you!

4th Annual HCS Homecoming Family Weekend
Friday, September 14

Holland Christian High School
This evening has become a family favorite, filled with good memories—even when it downpours! Picnic dinner and children’s activities, including bouncy houses, lawn games, and crafts, start at 5 pm, then the varsity football game against Zeeland East begins at 7. The cost is $8 per person in advance, including both dinner and game, and tickets are available online at or at the HCHS or HCS administration offices. Or it’s $10 per person on the day of the event. Looking forward to hanging out!

**Special note for preschool & kindergarten parents: Save the date but don’t buy your tickets yet for this event. This night is our treat to you! More information will be distributed by your classroom teacher.

Elementary Counselor

Our elementary counselor, Mrs. DeeDee Throop is at Pine Ridge every Wednesday (all day) and on Friday mornings, and at South Side on Tuesday and Friday afternoons to assist with any personal or social situations that might arise with our students.  She has 14 years of teaching experience and is starting her 17th year as a counselor.  She loves our children and thinks of herself as a “cheerleader” for them.  If you have questions or concerns about your child, please call (886-4240), or email or drop in on her designated days, to see her.  One of her mottos is that we all need a little help now and then.

Tuition Grant Fund Auction

The Tuition Grand Fund Auction is still weeks away, and we’re busy procuring items so that you have ample opportunities to “Dine, Bid and Be Charitable”! Before/After School Care Programs

We offer a before school program for families that need to drop off students as early as 7:00 AM, as well as our after school program starting at 3:15 until 5:30.  Families need to pre-register prior to using these programs to allow us time to provide adequate supervision.  We will allow drop-in’s as long as space allows. Please give the office a call at least 24 hours in advance. Click this online registration link  to begin the registration process for either of these programs.  If you have any questions regarding these programs please contact program director Tammy Grassmid at 616-834-6788.

South Side Announcements

Yellow Vest

We currently have a need for lunch recess supervisors on the playground, from 11:45-12:30 each day. Pay $10 for the 45 minutes. Even if you can’t commit to every day, if you would like to learn more, or know that you would like to help out in this capacity, please email , or call the office at 616-820-3535.

Groundbreaking Celebration

Save the date! On Monday, September 17 at 6:30 our Forest School families and the community at large are invited to attend a Forest School Groundbreaking Ceremony! Please mark your calendars. This will be a wonderful time to share in our gratitude for this program, our families, our staff, the support we have experienced from the community which all point directly to God’s faithfulness!

Carpool/Parent Pick up Procedure

Student safety must be, and remains our primary concern for everyone during student drop-off and dismissal at Pine Ridge. Our students, like any pedestrians, are defenseless against a moving vehicle. Do not assume anything as a driver. Remain alert always, and continue to scan and be aware of any and all students who may be around your vehicle at any given time as you slowly proceed.

Please communicate this information to any and all who may be involved in transporting your student(s) to and from school. All of us must be vigilant in observing these simple rules:

The drive along 40th is for bus lane only.
The drive off Graafschap road is for carpool vehicles only.

Before School

Use the Graafschap drive for dropping off your students.Please pull forward along the sidewalk (in front of our gym) at the curb. Do not stop anywhere on the traffic circle by the main entrance. Yield to the busses.
Do not park, attended or unattended, in the drive longer than to safely let your students out of your vehicle.
Park only in designated parking lot spots if you are getting out of your vehicle with your students. These would be the parking spaces along the grassy area to the west of the drive.

After School

Remain in your vehicles as we direct your students to your car during after-school carpool. Do not get out of your cars. We will get your students to you. Catch the staff member in the middle of the loading zone to get your child(ren) who do not see you on their own.
Generally, we only load students in the “loading zone” as indicated by the solid white lines painted across the drive, and by signs on the sidewalk next to the drive. When all cars are loaded in the loading zone, a teacher will dismiss each file of cars.
When people are moving, cars are not; when cars are moving, people are not. Once your car is in the loading zone, lock it down, and do not move again until invited to do so by the staff member at the front of the loading zone.
If you are walking with your child(ren) to the parking lot, do not walk through the carpool lines. Rather, cross in front of the carpool lines only when we are loading students, waiting, of course, when we are dismissing cars.
Remember these rules are for the safety of all of our children. At times, it will mean we will have to be patient. Thank you!

An after school program for boys in grades 3-5, Total Trek Quest (TTQ) combines the physical activity of training for a 5k run with a curriculum that focuses on learning to set goals, building strong relationships, and making healthy choices. This fun, interactive 9-week program uses running and educational activities to encourage positive mental health and wellness while also preventing high-risk behaviors. We have practices slated on Tuesdays/Thursdays, from 3:20-4:50, with the season running from the week of 9/10, and the last week of practices being the week of 11/5 (with the last practice on 11/8). Golf Lessons

Golf Lessons are now available for students ages 7-17 in Holland through The First Tee, a non-profit that teaches golf and values to ANY child regardless of family income. Sign up HERE for sessions at Macatawa Legends or Winding Creek. Classes begin August 27 or September 7 so register soon!
