Rose Park News 9/21/18

Dear Rose Park Family and Friends,

Isn’t the picture great? I love the smiles, energy, the sheer joy that is displayed so beautifully in these Kindergarten students at jumping two feet into the sand below their launching point. I love it! It captures the experience of so many at Rose Park. From the opening of the day when I am greeting out front, to my classroom visits and walks around the playground, I see much joy, energy, and excitement on the faces of students and staff alike. We are off to a great start this year with five weeks in already! Is that hard to believe for you? Or, are you and the family comfortably in the routine of a new school year already. Beside all of the day-to-day learning we have some great events coming up this week. Our annual Walkathon is Wednesday afternoon. Please feel free to come and join us for this community-building, fun, annual event for all three of our elementary campuses. Also, for parents, Tuesday evening at 7PM (see below) is our offering of the Screenagers video presentation. For all parents navigating the place of technology in your family’s and in your own lives, Screenagers will be a timely and helpful resource for all parents, but especially for those with 5th-12th grade students. And finally, on Friday, you get to enjoy an extra day with your children and families as all staff at HCS engage in a day of timely professional development to support the good work that happens on a daily basis in all of our buildings. Some of this time we will spend with our colleagues from Zeeland Christian, as well! I am looking forward to another great week next week!

As always, I pray that you may bless and be blessed this weekend with your families in rest, recreation, and in awe-filled worship. We are grateful to partner with you in equipping young and eager minds, nurturing soft and tender hearts, to transform the world for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It’s been a great first week, and we look forward to seeing your children again next week to love them and learn along with them.

Shalom,
Rod

SCREENAGERS – Tuesday evening, September 25, 7 pm

Holland Christian and Zeeland Christian School are partnering together for a showing of the film SCREENAGERS on September 25 at 7 pm in the HCHS Auditorium. Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. Please join us for this important event! We especially encourage parents with children in 5th-12th grade to attend this event. Check out the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/215750 447

Walk-A-Thon This Wednesday

This annual event has become a favorite. Students will be asked to collect funds from Family, friends, and neighbors in an effort to raise funds for non-budgeted classroom and playground improvements.  They will participate in a 45 minute walk at the high school track, in which they may walk, jog, or run around the track.  During the walk there will be games and activities for the kids to participate in as well. The event will be held during the school day on Wednesday from 1pm to 2:15 PM at the HCHS Track. Parents are invited to come cheer students on and enjoy an afternoon of fun.   Pledge forms have been collected, and we are excited to announce the classroom winners next week.   Thanks so much for your support!  We hope to see you at the track!
